You are in control of your own destiny, be fearless and take control or someone else will.
Stop. Pause. Reflect. Take time to realise that now is your time to gain success in life, this is a time to feel inspired and lifted you shouldn’t be feeling weighed down with overwhelming thoughts you just can’t budge. It’s time to get rid of these thoughts and get motivated as we look at the three mains ways of motivation and what applies to you.
Motivation is an amazing feeling; it is strong and positive yet a very delicate feeling at the same time which is brilliant at playing on our emotions. Some days you will wake up and you will be greeted with an energetic, enthusiastic friend pumping you full of excitement and motivation for the slightest of things. You bounce out of bed when the alarm goes off and pop the kettle on, instead of rolling over and pressing ‘snooze’. Other times laziness will overcome you, leading to procrastination and your subconscious making us delay jobs.
To gain success in life, we need to work hard on ourselves and not get trapped in the dreaded de-motivated phase. There are three main types of motivation which we can use to control our own destiny.
Conviction/Extrinsic- You are motivated by yourself, you have committed to your goal and spoken it out loud; however, there is more to conviction than just telling yourself you are going to get something done. You need to get to the root of your motivation and beliefs whilst underpinning your values to a system that shapes you. Conviction comes easier when you understand the significance of what you are doing, and what you wish to achieve with your newfound motivation. Keep expanding on your goals whilst asking why they are important.
Take ‘I am going to go for a run every day.’ And turn it into ‘I am going to go for a run every day, to lead the healthy lifestyle I will need to live a long and productive life’.
Values/Intrinsic- The values we portray through motivation are empathetic, we rely on the value of our motivation because it is the right thing to do. Motivation through values is the act of doing something because it feels good to you, you internally feel rewarded for achieving the task. Applied to the office environment, this could be doing work that feels purposeful and you thoroughly enjoy the time you spend with your teammates setting out to achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
Vision- You plan and set goals, so you can physically see them written down with a timeline in place. Through visionary motivation you can break down the long-term vision you have with achievable short-term actions. We can use our imagination to see the goals we have set out and how we want to achieve them. By living in the future, every single day we can see what we want to become, and we start living what we want to become- leading us to the success we envisioned.
By defining the reason we want to achieve something, alongside the level of desire we have to do the same activity we get motivated! Our motivation leads us to reach our goals through our incentives to accomplish for ourselves, our teams, our family and our future.
